About...

The facilitator of most workshops is Susan Jefts. She is a counselor and published poet living in Saratoga Springs, NY. She has combined her masters in counseling, her sixteen years as a personal and academic counselor and her lifelong love of poetry to offer people workshops that speak directly to their hearts and to the lives they are living. Susan has led workshops in settings including Glens Falls Hospital, Stillpoint Retreat Center, One Roof Holistic Center, Saratoga Hospital Nursing Home, Maplewood Manor, Schenectady County Community College, and Bloom Movement Studio. She has been published in several national and local journals and has been studying poetry, from ancient through contemporary times, for several years.

Workshops

I offer poetry experiences and workshops in a variety of settings, including retreat centers, yoga studios, hospitals, schools, private offices and out in nature. Some workshops are centered around a theme while others are focused on poetry and writing, but all use poetry as a vehicle for moving more deeply into the present experience of yourself in this moment. In this way, the groups are valuable for writers and non writers alike. We let the words and images of the poems speak to us and move us into a deeper place of knowing and creating.

The Poetry workshops fall under three areas:

1 - Workshops that focus on specific themes such as life transitions, exploring the beauty and wisdom of nature, health issues, moving through midlife, and others. In these groups poetry and its rich images, sound and rhythms are used as a way to move into the heart of what is and increase our self awareness. There is usually a writing component, but this is optional for each person.

2 - Workshops focused on Poetry as a Healing Art. Poetry is a powerful and effective complementary therapy for people coping with illness. Poetry's soothing, yet powerful words and rhythms can have a transformative effect on people if used under the care of a skilled facilitator. Its unique language has a way of illuminating the fragmented parts of ourselves and helping us to become whole again. Poetry is being used today in many hospitals and medical settings across the U.S. and other countries. In these workshops there is often a writing component, but this is always optional. Visit National Association for Poetry Therapy for additional information on poetry therapy.

3 - Workshops that focus on poetry itself and the writing of it. We might explore a particular type of poetry - ancient sacred, native American, nature, or particular forms such as the haiku, tanka, or ghazal. There will be a writing component to these workshops.
